This is the site of the Mather School, a school for formerly enslaved people established during Reconstruction in 1868.
Designation:
The site is a part of the Reconstruction Era National Historic Network.
The ringing of a school bell reminds everyone of their time rushing through hallways to get to their classrooms in a timely manner. The school bell at Mather was rung for the summoning of students for meals, school get-togethers and emergencies. The bell now sits on the Technical College of the Lowcountry campus in a spot that signifies where the school stood proudly for generations.
