Marye's Heights: Artillery Position
Atop Marye's Heights during the Battle of Fredericksburg were nine cannons of the Washington Artillery from New Orleans. Supporting the Washington Artillery were additional supporting batteries located in the rear and scattered across the high ground that encircles the town of Fredericksburg.
The fire from these cannons made reaching the heights an impossible goal for the Union soldiers tasked with accomplishing just that in December 1862.
