The Market House served as a marketplace and early town hall for Providence in the colonial and the early years after independence. Completed in 1775, it was designed by Joseph Brown and Stephen Hopkins. The first floor served as a market place for vendors including free African-Americans like George McCarty. The upper floors were used for public meetings. Town and later city business was done in the building before the building of Providence City Hall.

In the 1930s, John Hutchins Cady rehabilitated the structure which is now part of the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) campus.
