Quick Facts
In 1884, Henry Hobson Richardson and Frederick Law Olmsted traveled to Malden, Massachusetts to choose a site for the city’s new Public Library, known as the Converse Memorial Library. Richardson employed his popular classic sandstone façade, as he had done on many public buildings. For the landscape, Olmsted designed a courtyard for the L-shaped library, allowing visitors a space to gather. Olmsted also created a separation between the green entrance lawn and an open court by employing a short wall and wrought iron gate.
