The Lower Susquehanna Heritage Greenway (LSHG) weaves together the rich natural, cultural, and historical heritage of the Susquehanna River Valley and Upper Chesapeake Bay. As a Chesapeake Gateways Place, the Heritage Area connects visitors to scenic landscapes, diverse communities, and nationally significant trails.

Initially established around a 38-mile trail network linking shoreline towns, parks, and heritage resources, LSHG quickly evolved into a broader effort to promote heritage tourism, environmental stewardship, and economic revitalization. The Susquehanna’s role as a critical transportation corridor, its Indigenous history, and the stories of African American communities are central themes that the Greenway seeks to elevate and share.

Visitors can access an interconnected system of parks, trails, and historic sites, including Susquehanna State Park, the Mason-Dixon Trail System, and portions of the Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Trail, Star-Spangled Banner National Historic Trail, and Washington-Rochambeau Revolutionary Route.

Through collaborative programs and trail development, the Lower Susquehanna Heritage Greenway encourages exploration, conservation, and deeper understanding of the Bay’s most northern tributary. Learn more about the area’s experiences, stories, and outdoor opportunities by visiting the Upper Bay Trails website.
