Historical/Interpretive Information/Exhibits

1878

Flagstone walls and a roof made from earth, this partially dugout building was common on most pioneer farms and ranches. Before modern electric appliances, the cellar acted as a refrigerator to keep vegetables from freezing in the winter, butter and cheese from spoiling in the summer, and provided workers a place to hide from the hot sun. While the exact date of this cellar remains unknown, the location and materials place it within the time period of the newly completed Johnson family home.
