The lodge building at Antietam National was constructed in 1879. The building was designed by noted architect Paul Pelz, who designed the Library of Congress in Washington D.C. He also designed many of the notable lighthouse along both coasts of the United States.
The full time cemetery superintendent lived in this building and they were tasked with the upkeep of the cemetery. They would also provide guests with information about the cemetery and the burials located in this special space. This building is very similar to other lodge buildings visitors will see at national cemeteries across the country.
