The locomotive shop was built in 1883 out of poor-rock with brick accents around some of the windows and doors. Here workers repaired company locomotives and rail stock here prior to the construction of the round house in 1888. It then served as a blacksmith and general repair shop for the Hecla & Torch Lake Railroad. Later it also served as a pipe and pole shop, and a machine shop.
