Lindenwald is the name that Van Buren gave to the home and farm he would cultivate here after his presidency. A home was originally built here in 1797, and after Van Buren's purchase of the property in 1839 it would be modified to the appearance it retains today. The building is an eccentric mix of Federalist, Italianate, and Gothic Victorian styles as a result of Van Buren's renovations to the house, which included the tower on the south-west corner of the home. The home served as a political headquarters for Van Buren during his attempts to be reelected, and a place of work for the many domestic servants and farm workers that he needed to operate his residence.
