The plaza in front of the Lincoln Memorial is a broad, dignified expanse that serves as both a gathering place and a visual gateway to one of the most iconic monuments in the United States. Connecting the Reflecting Pool with the memorial, the open granite and marble surface creates a sense of calm and symmetry, framing unobstructed views of the Washington Monument and the Capitol beyond. Originally part of a traffic pattern encircling the memorial, the road was closed and converted to pedestrian use in 1976.
