The C&O Canal aqueducts are “water bridges” that carried canal boats over the creeks and rivers that flow into the Potomac River. Built between 1836 and 1838, the Licking Creek Aqueduct is the seventh of twelve such “works of art” on the canal. It was the first single arch aqueduct to be built on the canal. The Canal company described the 90-foot aqueduct as “one of the longest, if not the longest aqueduct arch” in the United States. It was later surpassed by the 297-foot arch of the Cabin John aqueduct at mile 7.6.
