The Lemons furnished their fancy parlor with only the finest things available to them. Only proper ladies and gentlemen, who didn’t want to take their meals with the common rabble in the dining room, were allowed in the parlor. Notice the wallpaper, the wall to wall carpeting, the piano, and the centrally located astral lamp-all signs that the Lemons were enjoying great success on the Summit. And the Lemons were happy to share that success with their guests. Along with the finer objects in the room, also notice that there are still spittoons and spit boxes-a sign that chewing tobacco use was not limited by class, or sex for that matter. This was truly a multi-purpose room. People could be eating at one table, while other travelers may be engaged in a game at another in the corner. A businessman from Pittsburgh could be catching up on the latest news in a chair by the fireplace, while his wife may be playing the piano under the watchful gaze of Mrs. Lemon, or at least from her painting that hangs above. But don’t get too comfortable-before long it will be time to reboard your train and continue on your journey.
