Grant and Lee held a short conference on horseback near this location on the morning of April 10. The terms of surrender agreed upon at the McLean House on April 9 only applied to Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia, but on April 10, Grant sought to hasten the war’s end by requesting that Lee use his influence as General in Chief of the Confederate armies to convince the other Southern forces to surrender. Lee refused this request, stating that the fates of the remaining Confederate armies would be up to Jefferson Davis and the other Confederate generals to decide. With armies remaining in the field, Lee asked if something could be provided to his men to ensure them safe passage home through Federal and Confederate lines, and Grant agreed to print parole passes for the Confederate troops.
