Land Use Trail: The Vista View

A break in a dense tree line is visible from an open field.
The Vista View provided the Estate with a view of the lower acreage and bay.

The wide break in the trees before you was cleared by John Gelston Floyd Jr. in the late 19th century. Called the “Vista,” this clearing was intended to provide a view to the shore of the bay and allow the ocean breeze to travel up to the house. Around 1900, he established “Meadow Ground Path,” a boardwalk at the end of the Vista to offer guests a way to view the salt meadows without getting their feet wet.
