Colonel Joseph Reed was up by hog runs heading to this location just north of General Grant National Memorial. This would have been called the Hollow's Way. This was an ancient riverbed, but now there is a bridge that would go over that area. The area is very hilly and the topographies change rapidly here and throughout upper Manhattan. 120 rangers from Thomas Knowlton’s regiment were being pushed northward. They go down into the valley to the other side, so this would act as a barrier to block the British light infantry led by Colonel Musgrave. Colonel Reed arrives and hears a bugle playing. This bugle tune was used for hunting foxes. He hears this, feels quite insulted and this becomes bulletin board material for George Washington to get the troops fired up, “…they're insulting us they are calling almost like they're hunting for us”.
