Home to a treasure trove of native Hawaiian species, Kīpukapuaulu is sometimes referred to by locals as "bird park". A 1.2-mile (1.9 km) loop hike will take you through a "kīpuka", an area of older vegetation surrounded by a more recent lava flow from Mauna Loa.
