The kitchen house is sometimes called the Ma'am Anna house in reference to her time in residence there. It was constructed during the Kingsley ownership but on the foundations of the kitchen house from prior property owners. The building was used not just as a residence and later office but also as a working kitchen providing meals for the plantation owners and their guests. Enslaved people, primarily women labored over hot fires and cast iron in the building. It was filled the the scents of food. Today the kitchen house has a covered porch. The second floor is empty to keep unnecessary weight off the structure. Inside are exhibit spaces dedicated to telling the stories of enslaved women, Anna Kingsley who eventually gained her freedom, and the many women who worked here that did not.
