This combination library and bathhouse was built by the Calumet & Hecla Mining Company in 1898 for the Village of Calumet. The building is two stories tall with a gabled roof. It is made from many-colored poor rock with brick accents on the corners and around the windows. The popular bath house soon had its own facility, and this became the Calumet & Hecla Public Library. At the library, the company offered a careful selection of educational materials in many languages as an effort to educate and assimilate their workforce into American society. Now known as the Keweenaw History Center, it houses NPS Lake Superior Collection Management Center staff, historical artifacts, and archives. Research appointments are available.
