There is nothing really left of what was known as the Kelly Mill. You can see green mounds surrounding what would have been the foundation of the mill. It was originally built around 1815 as the Smithfield Cotton and Woolen Company. It was built on the Whipple Farm property at Pray’s Landing. A group of local investors ran the mill, but bad management and bad timing caused the mill to fail. Captain Wilbur Kelly bought the mill in 1825.  He expanded it in 1845 and it stayed in business until 1867 when it was replaced by what is now known as the Ashton Mill (big brick mill across the river).
