Jujube or Zizi trees (Ziziphus jujuba(, a member of the buckhorn family, are native to south Asia. It is referred to as a Chinese or red date, as it matures from greenish-yellow to reddish-brown and wrinkled. The consistency and taste are like a green apple although less acidic. It is known as pomme surette on the French islands of the Caribbean. Jujubes are eaten as a fruit, used in alcoholic beverages, as a syrup, paste or jelly, and preserved as pickles or candies.
