This quilt block is called Joseph's Coat. While each 19th century seamstress may have varied patterns a little, this pattern must have been a popular one. Confederates after the surrender in February 1862 were described as having ragged and thin clothing, but the colors were "all the colors of Joseph's Coat."
Other accounts described Confederates wrapped in quilts, blankets, and even horse blankets to protect themselves from the harsh wintry and cold weather.
