Prior to the Civil War, Josiah M Jordan III lived on a 525- acre plantation called Clermont. The three-story plantation house, several outbuildings, and the farmland were valued at $1,575. The Dimmock line cut through the middle of the property. The Jordan family waited out the Petersburg campaign in Amelia County west of Petersburgh. After the war, the family returned to find their home destroyed. They chose to stay and rebuild. The Jordan family and six other families had homes and lived in the Eastern Front area.
