Union forces rallied here late in the morning of April 6, mounting a counterattack that briefly checked the Confederate offensive before being forced to withdraw across Tilghman Branch. Grant's troops, reinforced by Lew Wallace's division on the right, recovered this field the next day, driving the Confederate line back to Shiloh Church.
