Jonas Green and his Dutch immigrant wife Anne Catharine Hoof Green arrived in Annapolis in 1738 and set up a printing business here at their home at 124 Charles Street. He was named public printer by colonial Maryland’s government and became the printer and editor of The Maryland Gazette. Both were leaders of the movement for independence. After Jonas’s death in 1767, Anne took over the Maryland Gazette and helped promote lively political debate and bolstered the patriot cause in the years leading up to the start of the American Revolution. With only two brief interruptions, in 1765 and during the Revolution, the Maryland Gazette ran under three generations of the Green family from 1745 until it ceased publication in 1839.
