Drive the Iron Mountain Road to cruise the pigtail bridges and view Mount Rushmore National Memorial framed through Peter Norbeck’s famous single lane tunnels. Drive carefully, take turns, and give a honk as you drive through the tunnels to alert others you are on your way. The Iron Mountain Road north entrance starts within the boundaries of Mount Rushmore but is managed by the South Dakota Department of Transportation. During hazardous weather conditions this road may close; check SD 511.org for the most recent road updates. Keep in mind when entering the Iron Mountain Road from the north entrance the sculpture will be behind you as you drive through the tunnels.
