Cross the footbridge and explore Virginius and Halls islands. Search for ruins of homes, canals and mills once powered by the Shenandoah River. Always under threat of inundation, the combination of the Civil War and later flooding destroyed this village and its factories.
Virginius Island
Discover factory ruins that lay partially concealed since the 1900s.
Halls Island
The U.S. Rifle Factory, constructed on the site of the former Hall's rifle-works, was destroyed during the Civil War.
Wildlife
Look for great blue herons as you walk along the Shenandoah River shoreline.
Trail Safety
Avoid stinging nettle- Use caution near the Shenandoah River- Don't climb on ruins.
