Quick Facts

Historical/Interpretive Information/Exhibits

This stone is dedicated to the memory of Private George T. Stovall of the Rome Light Guards, 8th Georgia Infantry. Stovall edited a newspaper before the war and was among the first to volunteer from his community upon the outbreak of hostilities. He was one of many causalities in the regiment- upwards of 200 in total- on July 21, 1861.

Stovall's grieving parents had the marble monument fabricated to mark the spot where their son had been killed. Although completed in Richmond in November 1861, the monument remained unclaimed at Manassas Junction when the Confederate army withdrew before the arrival of spring. It was likely placed on the battlefield after the war but the exact date of installation remains unknown.

An undated photograph of the Stovall marker. The stone was later moved from its original location, leaving the exact site of Stovall's death unknown.
