Trees dominate the forest. By controlling the amount of sunlight that reaches the forest floor, they influence all woodland plants and animals. Some of the tallest and oldest trees in the park are chestnut oak which you see here. Like all oak trees in the park, this tree produces acorns in the fall which are eaten by squirrels and deer. You can identify the chestnut oak by its sawtooth edged leaves in summer and its deeply ridged bark in winter.
