If you are on the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail and stopped off at Lemhi Pass, consider a southwestern detour through the Salmon-Challis National Forest for a visit to the Idaho State Museum. The museum sits near the Boise River in Boise, Idaho, inside the Julia Davis Park. Originally built in 1950, the museum was recently renovated. Late additions include 46 multi-media interactive experiences that enhance visitors’ experiences. Managed by the Idaho State Historical Society, the museum offers visitors a chance to understand Idaho’s history, from the prehistoric to the present.

Exhibits are focused on Idaho’s settlement, agriculture, land management, landscape, state parks, and The Oregon Trail. For younger visitors, Idaho State Museum offers on-site and virtual “field trips” for grades 1-12. When planning your visit, be sure to check out the museum’s website for printable “Explorer Guides” that students and children can use to enhance their experience.
