Lewis and Clark NHT Visitor Centers and Museums

This map shows a range of features associated with the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail, which commemorates the 1803-1806 Lewis and Clark Expedition. The trail spans a large portion of the North American continent, from the Ohio River in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to the mouth of the Columbia River in Oregon. The trail is comprised of the historic route of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, an auto tour route, high potential historic sites (shown in black), visitor centers (shown in orange), and pivotal places (shown in green). These features can be selected on the map to reveal additional information. Also shown is a base map displaying state boundaries, cities, rivers, and highways. The map conveys how a significant area of the North American continent was traversed by the Lewis and Clark Expedition and indicates the many places where visitors can learn about their journey and experience the landscape through which they traveled.

The Hitchcock Nature Center in Honey Creek, Iowa offers outdoor recreation opportunities to visitors. Pottawattamie County Parks manages the center along with several other parks in the State of Iowa. The center is located in Loess Hills, and the Loess Hills Lodge Welcome Desk and Interpretive Facility are inside in the center.

Although Lewis and Clark never passed directly through the location of the center, the region still holds significance to the expedition. The location of Hitchcock Nature Center is not far from Council Bluffs, the meeting point of the Lewis and Clark Expedition and the Otos.

There are a variety of amenities available at the Hitchcock Nature Center such as hiking trails, an archery range, playground, and picnic areas. Campsites, cabins, and an RV campground are available for rent on site. The Loess Hills Lodge Interpretive Facility located in the center provides a gift shop, observation tower, restrooms, showers, and meeting rooms available for rent.

For more information, call the Loess Hills Lodge welcome desk at 712-545-3283 or visit the website.
