You might not have realized it, but as you came through the Avenue of Flags you were traveling over a historic road that people once drove. Follow in the footprints of history and stand at the Historic View Terrace - one of the original viewing areas for Mount Rushmore National Memorial.
The Historic View Terrace is a great place to take in the view slightly removed from the busy Grand View Terrace.
