The Guardians of the First Amendment Memorial was dedicated at Newman Park in 2021. It honors Wendi Winters, John McNamara, Gerald Fischman, Rebecca Smith and Rob Hiaasen, the five victims of the mass shooting at the Capital Gazette offices in 2018. The memorial also represents the commitment of the journalism community to uphold the basic rights enshrined in the U.S. Constitution.
