The Castolon Historic District represents the largest and most complex example of human history in Big Bend, where the cultures of Mexico and the United States of America met in one rural community along the border.

Like many of the military structures at Castolon, the guardhouse was barely used by the Army while they were stationed at Camp Santa Helena. After Wayne Cartledge purchased the buildings, he utilized this wooden structure as a chicken house.
