Gray Currants

Shaax are also called stink currants because the crushed leaves smell skunky. Its berries have a grayish coating that gives the plant its name. These tart berries ripen in August and the Huna Tlingit mix them with other berries of the season—blueberries, huckleberries and thimbleberries—to moderate the taste.
