This location provides an understanding of the outer earthworks and their importance for the Confederate defense line. At the time of the battle, this high ridge provided a view of the enemy's approach and positions.
Graves Battery was a six-gun battery commanded by Captain Rice E. Graves and placed here to guard the Indian Creek valley. They assisted with the February 13th attack on Maney's Battery and moved to support the Confederate breakout on February 15th.
