The Grand Parade saw many uses, including assembly, drill, inspection, and executions.

The Grand Parade served as the administrative and ceremonial center of the camp. Guards assembled here daily for inspection by the officer of the day. Every day the general orders for the camp were issued in a small hut built on the site. Public executions took place here. Two soldiers were executed by hanging and buried on the Grand Parade.

The original Grand Parade was 100 yards wide and 400 yards long, much larger than this clearing. The original Grand Parade was also located further back in the woods with its entrance on Jockey Hollow Road rather than at this location; you may be able to guess where it was if you follow the Grand Loop Trail through that area.
