Historical/Interpretive Information/Exhibits

When James and Lucretia purchased this property in 1876, many of the outbuildings, now located at the rear of the prorperty, were closer to the main house and Mentor Avenue. One of those buildings was a granary. Little is known about this building, but there a few references to such a building in James A. Diary from 1881:

"18 August 1881 Painting granary."
"19 August 1881 Lock and bolts for granary $2.50."

In 1893, Mrs. Garfield began to transform the farm into a country estate and one of ther first projects was to move the horse barn and other buildings, including the granary, to back of the property.

Today, the granary sits between the chicken coop and horse barn on stilts. Visitors are welcome to view the building from the outside.
