As the Cherokee traveled west during the forced removal, they reached the edge of Kentucky and used Berry’s Ferry to cross the Ohio River into Illinois. They landed in the small river town of Golconda. The Cherokee needed to travel another 55 miles before they would leave Illinois for Missouri. Several of the land detachments were stuck between the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers because of an incredibly harsh and deadly winter that froze the rivers, making it impossible to cross into Missouri. Many of the Cherokee ultimately died along the Illinois section of the trail because of these delays and harsh conditions.

The Trail of Tears passes through Golconda as well as Old Brownfield and Allen Springs following the Old Golconda Road. After Golconda, the trail curved southwest for six miles before changing direction to the northwest. Visitors today can drive this 8-mile segment of the original trail. Some nearby sites include Dixon Springs State Park and Lake Glendale Recreation Area.
