The casemates in these areas were originally divided in half. The outer half overlooked the Nantasket Roads shipping channel with two cannon embrasures each. The parade ground facing squad rooms housed 6-30 enlisted men depending on rank.

As the leading defensive side of the fort, two major structural developments took place largely due to artillery needs. Bastion A’s courtyard was covered in the 1870s, allowing for a total of five 15-inch Rodman cannons on the terreplein with new large indoor spaces below. The second development was the completion of Battery Stevenson in 1902 on the terreplein of Front I. Stevenson’s two 12-inch disappearing rifles had a range of 9 miles.
