Gates of Fort Clatsop

Two large swinging wood gates, sitting open, are surrounded by spiked logs.
The gates of the fort can, but don't often, close.

Historical/Interpretive Information/Exhibits

The gates of Fort Clatsop served as a reminder to all that this was still a military expedition and the Corps of Discovery would abide by military law at all times. The gates would be closed at sundown every evening once the fort was complete and any indigenous visitors would be asked to leave unless under special circumstance.

The expedition did not expect attack nor hosility but knew it to always be better safe than sorry. This was not only directed to local people but to any other nation that could have been present in the area as trading ships and vessels from over seas have been coming to the mouth of the Columbia River for years.
