The demonstration garden at Kingsley Plantation where park rangers and volunteers work to grow the sort of crops and foods that were common to the plantation era is constantly changing. Crops like indigo and sea island cotton are grown in the summer months, common cash crops, that once grew in the land beyond the tabby cabins. Other plants such as sugar cane, potatoes, onions, beans, greens, and even some flowers are grown to demonstrate the gardens which were maintained on Fort George Island, not for commercial production, but for survival.
