In 1914, Harry Truman’s mother gave him $650 to purchase his first car, a 1911 Stratford. The black, five-passenger 1911 model Strafford was hand built in Kansas City and only 300 were made. New, they sold for $2,350. The car allowed him to drive his father to medical appointments sometimes as many as four times a week and visit his future wife Bess Wallace Truman in Independence.
The car needed shelter from the Missouri weather so Harry Truman purchased a building in Grandview and moved in onto the farm. He converted the building into a garage for his Stafford.
