12. Bronze Surveying Statue

Albert Gallatin discovered, and later purchased, the property that Friendship Hill National Historic Site is located on while in the area surveying the land in western Pennsylvania. This statue can be found part way up the paved trail from the public parking lot to the Friendship Hill Visitor Center.

The statue shows a younger Gallatin using a Circumferentor (Surveyor's Compass) on a tripod. At the feet of the tripod, there is a set of Gunter's Chains and a satchel with a stake, protractor, and mathematical compass resting on top of it. Several other founding fathers started their careers as surveyors, including George Washington and Thomas Jefferson.
