Furnace Town Historic Site invites visitors to explore a lesser-known chapter of the Chesapeake Bay watershed’s history through industrial heritage, environmental conservation, and cultural traditions. As a Chesapeake Gateways Place, this living history museum preserves the 19th-century Nassawango Iron Furnace and the remnants of a once-thriving village.
Volunteer artisans demonstrate traditional crafts such as blacksmithing, weaving, broom making, and woodworking, bringing the village to life. Interactive exhibits and guided tours highlight the iron industry’s environmental and social impacts, including the contributions of Indigenous peoples, free African Americans, and immigrant laborers to the region’s development.
Bordered by Pocomoke State Forest and the Nassawango Creek Preserve, Furnace Town offers scenic nature trails, family-friendly activities, festivals, and workshops. Visitors experience both the industrial past and the lush natural beauty that connects history to Chesapeake Bay stewardship.
Furnace Town’s programs emphasize cultural conservation, hands-on learning, and environmental education, offering a comprehensive experience that celebrates both human ingenuity and natural heritage. Learn more about seasonal hours, artisan workshops, and special events by visiting Furnace Town Historic Site’s website.
