Front Porch of the Cavarly Barracks
NPS
This barracks building, built in 1874, is the largest building and the only enlisted men's quarters still standing at Fort Laramie. Although famous for Cavalry units, 80% of the soldiers at Fort Laramie were infantry units. The walls are constructed of lime grout concrete, like the rest of the buildings at the fort, with 20 inch thick walls. Following General William Tecumsah Sherman’s polices in 1869 for the suppression of American Indians, there was a greater need for troops and then barracks at Fort Laramie. In the tumultuous year of 1876 this was the home of Company K of the Second U.S. Calvary regiment.
