Historical/Interpretive Information/Exhibits
Francis Moore, like other Frederica settlers, wore many hats. He served as General Oglethorpe's secretary, town recorder, and keeper of the supplies in the King's Storehouses. Moore was also an author and shortly after returning to England in 1743, he published an eyewitness account of the founding of Frederica entitled A Voyage to Georgia.
Moore and is wife, Mary, lived on this site in a small, two-story brick house. When archaeologists excavated the site in 1958, they found charred timbers, burned nails, and molten glass- evidence that the house had been destroyed by fire.
The Moore plot can be found by veering north off Broad Street- the main street of Frederica- toward the barracks. A wayside shows the house floor plan and gives a description of Francis Moore's role at Frederica. Artifacts excavated from the site are on display.
