Fox Hunter’s Paradise is an overlook that has an interesting history and spectacular views! For years, the knoll below was said to be used for fox hunting. Hunters would bring their dogs to the mountain here and release them to hunt. The topography of the surrounding mountains and valleys allowed hunters to relax by the camp fire, while still following the sounds of their dogs. The high hills echoed back the distinct voices of each hound, signaling to their owners who was closest to the catch!
Families have also frequented the area simply to view the wonderful scenery. On a clear day you can see up to 50 miles. Sitting at 2,805 feet, this overlook offers views of (from left to the right) Fisher Peak, Slate Mountain, Round Peak, Sauratown Mountains (Hanging Rock & Pilot Mountain), Skull Camp Mountain, and Raccoon Mountain. During late spring the mountain tops come alive in a sea of green, and in fall burst with bright yellows and reds. On foggy days, the mountain peaks rise like islands in a sea of clouds.
If you are looking for a wonderful place to view a sunrise, or just to stop and rest, Fox Hunter’s Paradise will not disappoint!
Note: This overlook has two different parking areas. If you pull into the overlook going south on the parkway. A road to the right (inside the overlook) will take you to more parking as well as to a short walkway leading to an observation deck. The walkway to the stone overlook is 0.2 miles long and is wheelchair accessible.
