The center of Vancouver Barracks was the Parade Ground, which served as the training, drilling, and ceremonial space for the troops. Because of the bandstand and open green space, it also became a social arena where soldiers and the community interacted.
The most visible and significant feature of the Parade Ground was the central flagstaff. The colors that flew there were a symbol of government authority in the territory and a reminder of shared ideals.
The flagstaff also figured prominently in defining the military post. Distance measurements were given in relation to it, and it often appears in historic artwork and photographs. The flagstaff on the Parade Ground today replicates the one that stood in that location from 1854 to 1879.
