The Fort Necessity Picnic Area is about a mile from the visitor center, about seven minutes by car. Secluded deep in the woods, the historic pavilions and stone fire places were constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. Today's picnickers can carry their food to picnic tables spaced through out the picnic area and us the steel pedestal charcoal grills. Accessible picnic tables and grills are located adjacent to the parking area near the vault toilet. Drinking water is available.  Do not use the historic structures.

The picnic area is the trailhead for the Picnic Area Loop Trail. This single track foot trail through the woods, with many short ups and downs, takes about 15 minutes to hike.

The gravel road leaving the picnic area has a hairpin turn. This road is not suitable for buses and large recreational vehicles.
