Fort Main Gate

Two continental soldiers stand near a large door, nearly 20 feet high, with large iron cross bars.
The rooms inside the fort hold many interesting objects and stories.

These 2 large doors were closed each night as protection for the soldiers, and to deter deserters from leaving the fort. During the 1777 British siege of the fort, these doors were kept closed unless large numbers of soldiers had to leave or enter. When the gate was closed, the smaller wicket gate in the left door allowed passage for one soldier at a time.

From the Orderly Book of the 78th of Foot Highlands Regiment:
“Dec. 28, 1758
Parole: HULL – All the men to be told that, what Indians Come to the Gate with a Card Signed and Sealed by Major Clephane are to be Admitted. And those who have not to be Used Roughly; but told; or Signed to; that they are not to be Admitted…”
